In honour of International Women's Day: the lyrics to our Kitty Hawk song '16 Days'. It refers partly to the '16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence Campaign', that falls between 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and 10 December, Human Rights Day.
It's a call to remember the struggle women face all across the globe when it comes to violence and inequality.
It's a call to topple down normative patriarchy.
It's a call to all to be thoughtful of these issues.
A call to men to tear down their own prejudice, be open and accepting and through that find a form of protection against insane expectations of what 'masculinity' must entail.
It is a shout out to strong women. A commemoration of the sisters Mirabal, who fought to topple a dictatorship and who were murdered because of it.
A shout out to women musicians, artists, label owners. To their resilience.
OK, the title might be a bit misleading, but since it's March now I thought it was a good time to make some 2017 lists. I will stick to hard data for this post, I might divulge in some more lists later on that will be based on memory, reviews and highs and lows.
For this post I will use data as collected by the website Last.fm. The website has been around for over a decade and after a few meagre years it looks like a lot of listeners are using it again. The website is a great collection of biographies, discographies, and 'related artists' (this was my go to tool back in the day to discover new artists, kinda like what many people are using Spotify's similar function for nowadays). On top of that it was great to use as a way to find shows of bands that you like in your neighbourhood. For me though, the most important element of the website is the 'scrobbling', which means collecting and storing all the data of the songs you have been listening to. For someone with a fetish for lists and data (on certain topics), it is quite wonderful to for example be able to see that I listened to Chelsea Wolfe for the first time on December 18th, 2011, that my most listened to song by The Afghan Whigs is 'Debonair' and that I've listened to Emma Ruth Rundle at least 2,576 times in total.
The 'at least' I just put in there marks an issue with this data: it only covers music I've listened to either on my laptop or on my phone, both of which are connected to the data collecting app. Everything I listen to on cd (rarely nowadays) or vinyl does not get counted. So there might be some artists higher on the lists here below if the ol' fashioned spins are also taken into account. I've been using it since 2006, although I haven't always been as connected to it on different devices or through different programs, that's why some years seem almost barren compared to others. The last couple of years though I've been pretty good at keeping the score. Anyway, enough of all these lousy disclaimers, here are some lists.
